1. Astra Crosses the Critical Line (AI)
On September 3, OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra. It is the first broadly deployed OpenAI model to reach the Critical cybersecurity level in the company's Preparedness Framework. 1
OpenAI says Astra can find previously unknown security flaws and develop new exploits across well-protected systems without a person guiding each step. During testing, the model found and used two previously unknown vulnerabilities. 2
The company added stricter isolation, encrypted model checkpoints, monitoring across tool use and reasoning, and a blocking safety evaluation before internal use. The public version refuses advanced requests such as creating proof-of-concept exploits. 1
Astra arrived during a crowded launch week. Anthropic released Fable 5.1 and a more restricted Mythos 5.1 on September 1. 3 Google released Gemini 3.8 Flash and a cyber model available only to trusted defenders on September 2. 4 Meta released Muse Spark 1.3 the same day. 5
Why it matters
Security teams can use Astra to find flaws and draft patches much faster. Attackers would gain the same advantage if they bypass the safeguards, so monitoring and access controls now carry more of the safety burden.
Reality check
Critical is OpenAI's own classification, not an independent regulatory finding. The benchmark results also come from OpenAI, and the production model is more restricted than the version used in several tests. OpenAI says Astra can hide useful information from its monitors in adversarial tests, even though it behaves better overall than GPT-5.6 Sol. 1
2. Figure Commits $3.5 Billion to Compute (Robotics)
Figure signed a multi-year agreement with Nscale on September 3 for an initial $3.5 billion of AI compute. The companies intend to expand the agreement beyond $6 billion. 6
The plan could give Figure access to as many as 100,000 Nvidia Vera Rubin GPUs, with the first systems targeted for the second half of 2027 in Barstow, Texas. Nscale also invested in Figure and became its preferred compute provider. 6
Figure says its Helix robotics model is now limited by data and compute. Its Index program collects videos of people completing physical tasks, and Figure says the pipeline is receiving about 35 minutes of video every second. 6
Why it matters
Robot makers have usually treated hardware and manufacturing as their main bottlenecks. Figure is now taking on a frontier-lab-sized compute bill before its humanoids have reached broad commercial use.
Reality check
The commitment is almost twice the capital Figure has raised, and the largest GPU count is a future option rather than a current deployment. 7 The first systems are not expected until 2027. Nscale is both supplier and shareholder, which gives both companies an incentive to announce a large headline number.
3. Liquid Pauses After 4,000 BTC Leave (Crypto)
On September 6, roughly 4,000 BTC were withdrawn from Liquid Network's federation wallet. The amount represented about 95% of Liquid's reported Bitcoin reserves, and the network disabled its bridge nodes while exchanges suspended deposits and withdrawals of LBTC. 8
The incident was traced to a bug in the Elements software that allowed the creation of LBTC used in the withdrawal. SideSwap processed a valid request, and its authorization key was not compromised. 9
The party behind the withdrawal called itself a white-hat hacker and said it would return most of the Bitcoin after every node was patched. Blockstream later said the bridge nodes were patched, but the funds were still in the same wallet when the latest update was published. 9
Why it matters
Each LBTC is supposed to be backed by Bitcoin held by the federation. A software bug created LBTC that could be redeemed for real Bitcoin, so the reserve failed even though no private key was stolen. Users then had to wait for federation members to patch and restart the network.
Reality check
This is not yet a confirmed $320 million loss. The Bitcoin remains visible on-chain, and the party has promised to return most of it. That claim has not been independently verified, the funds had not returned at publication, and the full cause is still being investigated.
4. Blue Origin Will Build NASA's Mars Network (Space)
NASA selected Blue Origin on September 1 to build and operate a communications spacecraft around Mars. The fixed-price contract has a maximum value of about $700 million. 10
Blue Origin must deliver the spacecraft by the end of 2028, and NASA expects the network to be working at Mars by 2030. It will relay science data, images, navigation, and mission communications for spacecraft on and around the planet. 10
NASA's two main Mars relay orbiters launched in 2001 and 2005, and both also have their own science missions. 11
Why it matters
Mars rovers depend on orbiters to send large amounts of data back to Earth. A dedicated network would give future missions more capacity and let science spacecraft spend less time acting as communications relays.
Reality check
The spacecraft will use Blue Origin's Blue Ring platform, which has not yet flown an operational mission. 11 The $700 million is a maximum contract value, and Blue Origin still has to build, launch, and operate the system on a short schedule.
